Extending the Curve
For Hairdressers & Barbers

A business course to help you succeed as a salon or barbershop entrepreneur.

Are you a senior apprentice hairdresser or barber who wants to develop your salon management skills?

SAHBA, in collaboration with The French Beauty Academy, is excited to offer a complimentary Salon Management course. We are thrilled to present a skills cluster that provides valuable insight into the essentials of salon management. The three units delivered by our Diamond sponsor, The French Beauty Academy, form part of the SHB50216 Diploma of Salon Management. Successfully completing this course will mean you only need to complete the remaining seven units and be awarded your full qualification.

“I have been a hairdresser for 25 years, and a salon owner and SAHBA member for 15 years. I am now a newly appointed board director.

I have used SAHBA for advice many times over the years on wage structures and rates, rules around apprentice contracts and overall support as an employer.

I look forward to being involved in positive change around apprentices and retention of hairdressers ...”

NEW PATHWAY TO RECOGNITION:
SAHBA & SA SKILLS COMMISSION EMPOWER HAIRDRESSERS AND BARBERS

SAHBA, in conjunction with the South Australian Skills Commission, is proud to introduce the Occupational Recognition Service (ORS) for hairdressers and barbers.

This initiative provides a formal recognition pathway for skilled professionals who have developed their expertise through industry experience rather than a traditional apprenticeship.

A Regulated Industry in South Australia

Did you know that hairdressing and barbering are regulated in South Australia?

In South Australia and NSW, hairdressing and barbering are regulated by legislation to ensure high standards of practice, safety, and professionalism. This helps protect consumers by ensuring practitioners are trained and follow health and safety guidelines, creating a safe environment for both clients and stylists.

The Hairdressers Act 1988 and Hairdressers Regulations 2016 ensure that all professionals meet industry standards, uphold consumer safety, and operate legally in the state. The Hairdressers Act prohibits the practice of hairdressing by unqualified persons.

Who Can Apply?

  • Individuals residing in, relocating to, or with work contracts in South Australia.

  • Hairdressers and barbers with at least 42 months of industry experience and can demonstrate their skills and knowledge to an industry panel.

How It Works

  • Application Submission – Applicants provide evidence of their skills and experience.

  • Industry Interview Panel – SAHBA’s industry-current members assess candidates' knowledge.

  • Skills Demonstration – Applicants attend a skills assessment at RTO.

  • Occupational Certificate Issuance – Upon successful completion, the South Australian Skills Commission will issue an Occupational Certificate confirming eligibility to work as a barber or hairdresser in South Australia.

Strengthening the Industry

The Occupational Recognition Service (ORS) is a critical workforce development initiative that:

  • Supports career progression for experienced professionals.

  • Maintains high industry standards and ethical practices.

  • Ensures consumer safety and fair employment conditions.
